Tatsächlich wirken viele Kräfte in Schmölzers Malerei.

It is not easy to discern who or what exactly would be responsible for the genesis of the nuanced abstractions by Nicole Schmölzer. Is it the artist herself who wants to achieve a specific effect with her imagination? Is it gravity which causes the paint to flow on the primed linen or paper—or rather is it the specific microclimate of the studio in which painting process plays out: its influence over the behavior of the material, the drying process or the penetration of the dissolved pigments into the fabric? In fact many forces play out in Schmölzer’s painting. Her abstract images emerge in a field of tension between chance and control, curiosity and expectation, experiment and experience. With ink and oil paint, and with a lot of liquid poured onto the linen, she hands the process of the pictorial search over to itself, layer by layer—thereby sharpening the eye for a central aspect in her creative process: painting means to see and observe, to stimulate and let happen in equal measure. The results are intriguing light color-spaces which make one think of dramatic cloud formations and then again of something like landscapes—yet they never refer to anything else but the forming power of the painterly media themselves. The publication gives a representational overview of Nicole Schmölzer’s recent work on linen and paper.
